SE National County Team Championships
The County Team Champs is always a fun, colourful and competitive event played out in front of a packed house in Sheffield’s Ponds Forge. It kicks off the competitive short course season for many of the swimmers allowing for some early season racing.
More than 900 swimmers compete from 36 counties with races going on in two pools at the same time. On one side Division 1 races on the other Division 2. The excitement builds through the day as teams battle it out for promotion, avoiding relegation and for a placing.
Somersets’ team consisted of 28 swimmers (19 being Millfield). The team travelled up to Sheffield on the Saturday evening in preparation for a big days racing on the Sunday.
As we headed off to the pool after a hearty breakfast swimmers attended to the important matter of team colours. Dimitrios showed his full commitment to the team with a Braveheart approach to face paint.
Before racing kicked off Rebecca Gooch & Huw Williams, Somerset captains, led the team out in the procession. Huw received a gold hat this year as it was his 5th time representing the county at the National Championships.
Racing started with the 16/17 yrs 100m free with Ioan E coming 5th. Next in the 12/13 yrs 100m Brst Rhys I Dropped 4 seconds on his personal best earning valuable points for the team. Evan J swam a strong 100m fly moving up 3 places on where he was seeded! In the 16/17 yrs 100m bk Tatiana T swam a new personal best time with Ioan E swimming a strong race.
Frankie H and Richard J both dropped time on their 100m Free time with Richard going under the minute mark for the first time.
This was backed up by Dimitrios T dropping time on his 100m brs coming 3rd overall.
The 16/17 yrs boys medley was a closely contested race with Somerset coming 6th. Then the girls 12/13 yrs medley team stormed to victory with the boys 14/15 yrs medley team matching their efforts.
Huw W battled it out in the 16/17 yrs 100m fly showing a much more controlled swim than the relay.
Frankie H & Adam W both then dropped time on the 12/13 yrs 100m BK earning valuable points for Somerset.
Rhiannon E & Calvin F demonstrated some great underwater phases in the 14/15 yrs 100m Fr. Izzy R & Will E then went on to drop time on in the 16/17yrs 100m Brs with Will E picking up 3rd place.
Leo F followed suit dropping time in the 12/13 yrs 100m Fly.
Last individuals of the day saw Gemma P and David O’L drop under their personal bests in the 14/15 100m Bk. David O’L finished ahead of the field by over a second with an awesome 56.38 with Gemma P moving up the placings on her seeded time.
After an awesome day of racing the team came a valiant 6th place, it was very close at the top!
