Helen Gouldby: Director of Prep School Swimming
Helen is Millfield through and through having swum for the school from 1982-1988 and during that time also representing Great Britain at Europeans, Commonwealths and Olympic games. After studying at Swansea she returned to Millfield Senior School as Assistant Coach and then gained her qualifications as advanced swimming teacher and coach. She was then charged with restructuring the swimming programme at Millfield Prep School where she has been based for the past 18 years. Even after this length of time her passion for swimming excellence and her ideology of developing excellent skills and technique from an early age is evident in her programme today. Nothing gives her greater pleasure than having a former pupil coaching with her today and also watching her eldest daughter compete. She is greatly indebted to the support of Lin Skirton, a fellow Olympian, who has worked unstintingly with her for the past 10 years.
Best Swimming moment of all time:
Coaching Rio Kurihara from the age of 3 to win 7 gold medals at the 2010 National Age Group Championships and breaking the British Record in the 200m Breaststroke.
Helen’s Interesting Fact:
In 1984 Olympic Trials Helen managed to finish 4th with a broken ankle, she went over on it the night before on the way back from the cinema but continued to race. She didn’t find out it was broken until 2009 when she went to hospital with suspected sprained ankle, doctors noticed in the x-ray that it had been broken 25 years earlier, that’s what we call swimming tough.
